For centuries, the Roma or Romani have arguably been one of the most misunderstood people groups on our planet. Rumors have long persisted about these mysterious people who blow into town, seduce men and women, and then steal everything in sight, including children. Myths about lusty women, scarf-wearing fortune-tellers, and caravans have filled the silver screen thanks to Hollywood. Who and what a Roma “gypsy” is goes from myth to “fact” in our mind as we listen to these rumors and watch romanticized movie portrayals.
How can a people group of over 15 million world-wide stir up such controversy and debate about their identity and origin? How can a population this large have a global blind eye turned to them? They are debatably one of most oppressed, marginalized, despised, and neglected people groups to ever exist in humanity. Forgotten and dehumanized at every turn. Told they are nothing and nobody. This is the message that wallpapers the heart of a Roma.
As the Good Story stumbled into this story of the Gospel and the Roma we were compelled to travel to Europe and provide them an opportunity to tell their story in their own words. We wanted to lift them up so they had a voice.
I was fortunate enough to edit this documentary which included motion design seen below.
